Our son, Logan, moved to Reno, Nevada in January of 2016. He’s a Captain in the Army and had been stationed in Italy for the last three years and in Hawaii for three and a half years prior to that. Getting him back on the same land mass was a big step for us – still 2,700 miles away, but hey, same continent, right? So, it was Thanksgiving in Reno this year!

For his three year stint in Reno, he’ll be teaching ROTC at the University of Nevada, Reno, a job he’s really very good at. In June of this year, he acquired Shiner, a two month old Vizsla that he purchased here in Tampa, and asked us take temporary possession of and house-break until he could come get him in August. The two made the six day road trip back to Reno together, so this was the first time we’d seen Shiner since he was just a 24 lb puppy (now 50 lbs).

Day One, Logan and I took a hike to “the N,” which is literally the letter “N” formed by painted white rocks, up a few thousand feet of a hillside overlooking Reno. It’s enormous and can be seen from all over Reno. I didn’t take a photo of it. It was 38 degrees with wind gusting between 25-30 mph, so… COLD! Took only about 40 minutes to get there, then we sat and waited for the Sun to rise over the Sierra Nevadas, which was spectacular. I didn’t take a photo of that either. Instead, I got a shot or two of Logan, then a great perspective of North Reno.

Highlights from Days Two through Six included a walking tour of the University of Nevada, Reno, where Logan works, Thanksgiving, lunch at Casale’s Halfway Club (a local’s diner that has been in business since 1937), a trip to the dog park, which is a really huge (several acres), sparsely fenced in open area, an afternoon at the Eldorado Casino (where Logan and Kaye’s winnings at the Craps Table and One Armed Bandits, almost made up for my losses in Roulette), a snowfall (Shiner’s first), and several one-mile-long trips around the lake by Logan’s condo.

To sum it up… a GREAT Thanksgiving indeed. Thank you for allowing me to share a touch of the Newsome family life with you. The photos represent only a sliver of what you know I took. 🙂
